Do I Want to Become an Ultrasound Technician?

Have you been thinking about becoming a sonographer, as ultrasound techs are called, but you need some more information? You certainly need to know how much time it takes to go to college for this and whether you will make a decent living doing it. What exactly would you be doing at this job is another good question to ask.

You might be surprised to know that there is an increasing need for ultrasound techs and this is expected to continue. No matter what happens with the economy, people still get sick and need to be diagnosed with what ails them.

There have been enormous changes in the health care industry over the last 10 years and millions of Americans are uninsured or under insured. This means that the usual means for diagnosing health problems has been rapidly changing. There has been a gradual shift from the more expensive MRIs and CAT scans, to the less expensive sonography testing as an alternative to diagnosing everything from heart problems to thyroid problems and more.

The pay for sonographers is another attraction to this field. It is not unusual for a full time sonographer to make around $61,000 per year. The majority of sonographers work in a hospital setting. It is possible that you may move your equipment to a patients bedside when needed.

After being accepted into the entry level ultrasound technician training school through an accredited college, it is most likely that you will go to college full time for two years to graduate. Most Ultrasound Techs have an Associate degree. The coursework requires a lot of study so be ready to do serious study, otherwise this may not be for you.

It is difficult to know whether you will like working as a Ultrasound technician if you have never done it before. You typically work in a darkened room with your equipment and have interaction with patients every day. The sonographer becomes very skilled at taking very accurate sonograms in the minutest detail possible. You would typically work a 40 hour work week.

The best thing to do would be to get a list of course requirements to enter the program and more details from the department head in the program at your nearest college that offers it. This job position could also be a door opener to other health fields for you in the future.
