Getting all your information before deciding on a career is a wise thing to do. You have to be sure that you will want to work as a surgical tech after getting the training. The schooling to become a surgical tech is relatively short. It can usually be done in 9 months, but can take up to two years. A graduate can get a certificate, diploma, or an Associates degree.

It is predicted that the growth for this job position will continue to increase as this position is necessary for most surgeries that are performed in hospitals and other facilities.

The pay is fairly good too. The median average salary in 2008 was about $38,000 but surgical techs have been known to make up to $54,000 per year.

The surgical tech may need to stand for long periods of time during surgery handing surgical instruments and supplies to the surgeons as needed. The surgical tech may also observe patients vital signs. They will assist in getting patients ready for surgery by getting incision sites prepared.

It would be good to know whether you are willing to take direction from others because you will need to do this on a daily basis. You will always be taking direct orders from Doctors and nursing staff.

The surgical tech may be a good stepping stone for you to enter into another health care career path. Many surgical techs move on to becoming nurses, radiologists and so forth, but ultimately the amount of time and effort you are going to want to put into each specific career will depend on your future in the health care industry as well.
